show & share: see clearly

I made this assemblage for Bob for Christmas a couple years ago, and it hangs on a wall in our dining room in a spot where I can visit it every day. I treasure it dearly for both the emotions and the memories it evokes.

I gathered a few precious souvenirs of our 2007 trip to the UK (rocks, sea shells, a piece of driftwood, a bit of dried heather - all gathered on the coast of Ireland) and combined them with some vintage lace, buttons and trim, and a bit of Gaelic text I found on the internet. The vintage photo mat I scanned from one of Rebecca Sower's photo art pieces, whose mixed media art inspired this piece. BTW, I have been inspired by the work of this amazing artist for years. And it's not just her art, it's the way she truly lives her faith, honoring the Lord in everything she does.

I started with an 8x10 canvas I bought at Michael's. I distressed the wood a bit, then applied some Golden molding paste with a palette knife. Once it was dry I sanded it, then began adding layers of liquid acrylic paint - rubbing, scrubbing, sanding the surface until it looked like driftwood. I painted the canvas in the same way, leaning more toward the wonderful faded aqua tones I remembered from the little seaside town where I took the photo. I did a bit of editing in Photoshop Elements to give the photo a dreamy, misty feel.

I assembled everything within the wooden frame (this makes a nice shadow box) and enclosed it with a piece of glass. Then I wrapped some annealed wire around it all to hold it together. I did use some strong glue (hidden under the driftwood) to keep it from slipping.

This layout is from the scrapbook I made to commemorate our trip. Waterville - located on the west coast of Ireland - is the one place Bob continues to mention as the place he would like to return to...

The journaling is in Bob's own words:

I would have been content to spend
the entire 24 days here...
walking the shoreline
and counting the waves.

empath

I made these scrapbook pages for Kelly a few years ago, inspired by an email she had sent me about something she had read on the internet. "Mom, this is us!"

I just now googled empath and found the link Kelly had sent me...these are her own excerpts from that article:

Empaths experience empathy towards family, children, friends, close associates, complete strangers, pets, plants and inanimate objects. They are highly sensitive, have a deep sense of knowing and are often compassionate, considerate, and understanding of others. Generally, those who are empathic grow up with these tendencies and do not learn about them until later in life. Empaths often possess the ability to sense others on many different levels.

Empaths are often poets in motion. They are the born writers, singers, and artists with a high degree of creativity and imagination. They are known for many talents as their interests are varied, broad and continual, loving, loyal and humorous. They often have interests in many cultures and view them with a broad-minded perspective.

Empaths are often very affectionate in personality and expression, great listeners and counselors (and not just in the professional area). They will find themselves helping others and often putting their own needs aside to do so.

Animals are often dear to the heart of empaths, not as a power object, but as a natural love. It is not uncommon for empaths to have more than one pet in their homes.

They are highly expressive in all areas of emotional connection, and talk openly and, at times, quite frankly in respect to themselves. Empaths have a tendency to openly feel what is outside of them more so than what is inside of them.

In general, an empath is non-violent, non-aggressive, and leans more towards being the peacemaker. Any area filled with disharmony creates an uncomfortable feeling in an empath.

People of all walks of life and animals are attracted to the warmth and genuine compassion of empaths. Regardless of whether others are aware of one being empathic, people are drawn to them as a metal object to a magnet! They are the beacons of light in our world.

Happy Birthday to my sweet Kelly!
You truly are a blessing
to all who know and love you.

rescuing a caterpillar

Today I am linking up with Photo Heart Connection, Kat Sloma's monthly retrospective review of 'the photo that best connects to your heart.' I made this shot while on a little hike with my daughters last Saturday. I was trying out my new Canon 6D, getting acquainted with all the buttons and dials, so I wasn't expecting anything special. We were just walking along, 'dishing' about this and that, when Erin spied this little fella trying to cross the trail. Immediately, simultaneously we all thought the same thing: he's going to get trampled before he can make it across! Without hesitation, she gently scooped him up, and while we debated where to put him (which direction was he actually heading?...we didn't want to make him start all over again), I made this shot. On the fly...the spur of the moment. I hardly had time to even focus. Then Kelly chimed in with this quote she'd once heard...

mouse over to see the original

...and a precious memory was born.

When I reviewed my shots in Lightroom and zoomed in on this shot I was amazed at the detail I had captured. 20 megapixels. Wow!

It got me thinking of the days when we used to hike and camp with the girls...and I recalled this snapshot I took many years ago.

I'm also linking up with Beyond Beyond 'cause I started with Kim's tutorial on creating my own hazy preset...but as happens so often with my creative process, I end up not quite where I thought I would be when I started. I played around with several Lightroom presets, finally settling on one of David duChemin's - Iceland Split Blues. Then I added Kim's texture - kk_prague - Soft Light blend mode @39%...all of which gave it the spring/hazy feel I was after in the first place.

li'l punkins: part 2

So...when I made the storyboard for last week's post, which was just the three photos, I figured I might as well print it so I could use it for the girls' scrapbooks. On a whim I decided to print it on a transparency...then I left the rest up to chance, adding stitching, assorted papers, stamping, stickers, ribbon and tags, just making it up as I went along. Then Dad & I both signed. Yes, I made two identical layouts, one for each daughter's scrapbook.

Happy Halloween!

we found these two l'il punkins.

What joy they have brought
to our lives!

I've been playing around in Photoshop and Lightroom, learning so many things that my brain is tired. Once again, huge thanks to Kim Klassen for leading me on this grand adventure, through her many fabulous online courses this past year.

I've also been reading a new book - Vision & Voice, by David duChemin...inspiring me to "discover your vision for that image - the internal, invisible guiding principle that directs how you capture the image and how you develop it in the digital darkroom. Without vision, you likely find yourself flailing both behind the camera and in front of the computer - indiscriminately shooting and arbitrarily moving sliders in hopes of stumbling upon something great every once in awhile."

As with any art form, once you learn some basic skills, you start thinking about what you want to say with your art, or as David puts it, "identifying your vision...and giving it voice."

This little storyboard is the first project I've attempted since studying David's book; strangely enough, it involves a handful of snapshots I took 21 years ago, before I ever considered photography to be my art form (well, one of them, at least). I started with a Vision (simply this: a sentimental recollection of fond memories from my girls' childhood), dug out the snapshots, scanned them into my computer, and played with them in Lightroom and Photoshop....til I had given it Voice.

Yeah...it's a pretty simple, straightforward Vision, but totally from my heart and soul...where I have always found my best "stuff."

Stay tuned for the scrapbook layout...Halloween seems a reasonable deadline for me. Got the urge play with some paper and glue and paint and embellishments and....
